Assignment 3: Colour

In this assignment I am tasked with creating groups of 4 photographs which show 4 different colour relationships. These relationships being:

  • Complementary colours showing colour harmony - these colours which face each other (180 degrees) across the colour circle.
  • Similar colours showing colour harmony - these colours are near to each other (60-90 degrees) in the colour circle, such as cool blues or warm reds and oranges.
  • Contrasting colours showing colour contrast - this is where the colours are around 120 degrees from each other in the colour circle.
  • Spot or accent colours - one colour is a point within a larger body of any different colour.

Colour Harmony through Complementary Colours

Complementary Colours: Red and Green in an approximate 1:1 ratio.

The movement is shown in the sketch, showing how the water is running off the apple.

Complementary Colours: Violet and Yellow. The ratio should be 3:1 for these colours but I felt the needs of the image outweighed this balance.

This is a 'bullseye' image so movement and balance are central and moving outwards.

Complementary Colours: Orange and Blue. Again the ratio should be 1:2 so it isn't quite ideal but I think the idea works nevertheless.

The brighter orange balances the darker blue. Movement could be imagined in the swinging doors.

Complementary Colours: Yellow and Purple. Here the ratio is closer to the desirable 1:3.

Again, here the brighter yellow balances the darker purple.

Colour Harmony through Similar Colours

Similar Colours: Yellow and Orange.

There is movement of the people in the reflection and the imagined swaying of the yellow balloon behind the window. The smaller bold orange balances the more washed out yellow.

Similar Colours: Violet and Red.

Again there is potential movement in the purple flower heads. Balance is achieved between the 2 purple clusters and the more numerous red flowers behind.

Similar Colours: Red and Violet. There are several hues of red and violet in this bouquet of flowers.

There is a sense of movement from the handle of the bouquet to the flowers.

There are some clear trends here, with the sloping red painted rail and the upright pickets. Balance is achieved by the bright orange taking up a side of the image while the red fence dominates the centre and right.  Some yellow is thrown in at the top too!

Colour Contrast through Contrasting Colours

Contrasting Colours: Red and Blue. In order to make the image interesting I have kept the reflections in the scene, meaning that the colour balance is out. Using the colour ratios suggested by J.W. von  Goethe, the blue should ideally take up twice the proportion of the image than the red. I could actually have used this image as an example of spot colour/colour accent.

Almost perfectly balanced blocks of colour!

Contrasting Colours: Red and Yellow. This is a no smoking sign at a Shell petrol station. The red and yellow have huge contrast in this image.

Contrasting Colours: Yellow and Blue.

Adding to the comment on the sketch, there is also a sense of movement diagonally through the bottom right corner, as this is the tunnel under the railway line.

Contrasting Colours: Green, Violet and Orange.

No particular sense of movement here - the image is pretty static. It's actually a climbing frame in a childrens' play area but is abstract here.

Colour Accent

Colour Accent: Red on Green.

I suppose the sense of movement should really be towards the bottom  of the flag, but I see it more as a point with movement radiating out in all directions. Cropping the image forced my hand on the positioning of the red point.

Colour Accent: Blue on Green.

The same here as above, the point has no real reference so there is little other than the drainage stains and the flowing river beneath, to suggest movement.

Colour Accent: Orange on Yellow.

A pretty well balance shot, with the yellow 'V' tipped with orange.  I perceive the movement to be along the edges of the 'V' to the orange point.

Clear movement on the road and cycle path, but more subtly the flowing river Thames under Wandsworth Bridge. A just off centre yellow floral memorial stands out in what is essentially a blue image.
